日本の商用ウェブサイトに原稿を出すと、段落が改まるとき、このように空行を入れたうえで、段落の最初に1字、空白をあける。私の知っている限り、新聞社もCNETやASCII.jpなどもすべてそうなっているが、これは日本だけの奇習である。海外のサイト（たとえばNYタイムズ）では、空行を入れるだけで、行頭に空白は入れない。
This is an equivalent to saying that writing in Japanese is a peculiar custom of Japan. It does make sense if he asks why Japanese formatting custom requires the first sentence of a paragraph to be indented. But his logic, 'Japanese websites are wrong because New York Times doesn't indent.', sounds ridiculous to me.
Chinese also do indent one character at the beginning of a paragraph. But never mind, it is just only one of those weird local rules for only about 1.3billion people.
